Teaching Strategies For Students With Learning Disabilities


Airmen from Ramstein’s National Disability Employment Awareness Committee visited elementary schools within the Kaiserslautern Military Community to read to students for National Disability Employment Awareness Month Oct. 17 through Oct. 20, 2017.


The two-day Learning Disabilities Conferences 2019 was an event that was geared towards providing educators with significant and empirical information, including techniques that would help support students with learning disabilities. The keynote speakers shared their experiences and were also open to questions after their speeches in order to accommodate the queries made by parents and other concerned participants. There were breakout sessions that offered new insights into the field of learning disabilities based on practice-informed and evidence-based strategies. The event was also a great opportunity for other professionals to connect with each other and establish relationships.

In relation to this, we are sharing with you some teaching strategies for math, reading, tests and accommodations, and writing.

In reading:

  • Let your students use both their auditory and visual senses when reading books.
  • Prepare a quiet space for them to do their reading activities.
  • Present your reading materials in small increments.
  • Do storytelling with your students to encourage them to listen and try to understand the story being told to them.
  • Teach them how to organize their books properly.
  • Use storiers or materials that have simple words and words that they frequently read and see.

In math:

  • Allow your students to use scratch papers or their fingers.
  • Provide tutoring opportunities and peer guidance.
  • Encourage them to use colored pencils in differentiating problems.
  • Provide graph papers so that they can arrange the numbers in the math problems.
  • Utilize simple diagrams and draw the math concepts that you teach them.

In tests and accommodations:

  • Don’t use exaggerated words in your test questions and separate items when you are positioning them on the examination sheet.
  • Get rid of all kinds of distractions while your students are taking their tests.
  • Allow your students to write their answers on the exam sheet.
  • For those with reading disabilities, assign a person to read out the test to them.
  • Train students to always proofread their homework and examinations before submitting them.

Professionals from universities across the globe graced the 2017 Disabilities Conference. Seasoned educators from Canada, Washington, Ireland, Austria, and Hawaii shared their knowledge and expertise in campus life improvements, family and community support, academic support, and independent living strategies for disabled individuals. Filmmakers also made it to the event, and they presented short movies about people who suffer from intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). The highlight of the event was the students with disabilities, which meant a lot to the organizers, as several years ago, these students would not have been attending college but stayed in their homes, not learning and knowing what they were capable of doing.
